Experience the wonders of the kiwifruit industry on an idyllic working kiwifruit orchard. The 60 hectare 'Longridge Orchard' has over 30 canopy hectares of Zespri Green and Zespri Gold kiwifruit. This is one of the larger kiwifruit properties in the Bay of Plenty. The rolling hills and plateaus provide spectacular views and vantage points.
The Kaituna River boarders the property. The river runs from its source Lake Rotoiti in Rotorua all the way out to the Maketu coast. Historically, an important travelling route inland used by the Maori tribes from the coast.
Kiwifruit thrives in the Bay of Plenty.
The unique combination of a temperate climate, close proximity to the ocean, volcanic ash soils and landforms make this the ideal place to grow kiwifruit.
Around 80% of all kiwifruit grown in New Zealand grows in the Bay of Plenty.
On the tour we describe the seasonal production cycle :
Winter pruning sets up the foundations for the following year.
Bud burst, new shoots, flowering, pollination with the help of the bees and early stages of growth for young kiwifruit berries.
Growth, Summer pruning, thinning, Girdling and taste management.
